A parent's guide to making your kid a smart consumer
When your kid is browsing the internet or playing a game on a phone or tablet and especially computer its important to tell them not to click on any of the sidebarsor ads even if they seem interesting or fun. Tell them never fill out anything without your parents permission. Giving out private information to a site that you don't know is dangerous and you need to let your child know this. It's important to keep your kids away from advertising as much as possible lead your kids to watch tv shows on networks that don't have and commercial pop ups or breaks. Set an example, kids weather you think they are or not, follow in your footsteps and copy things that you do so it's important to not give into advertising yourself and not to give into buying things excessively. Discuss with your kids what tricks or things that the brand is using to make you want to buy their product. For example cereal brands use glue in ads as milk to make the cereal look better and more pleasing to the eye. Make sure to talk to your kid and let them know that things in ads are glorified and not real. It's important to discuss these tools of persuasion with your kid so they know that not everything they see on tv is real, and so they know when there being tricked into buying something. Discuss smartphone and app ads. Some advertisers get kids to trade personal information. Marketers are also able to get information on kids through messaging apps such as Snapchat and instagram and are able to send them text ads, or give them ads that are personalized to them, make sure your kid knows that they are being set up and they know how advertising companies are getting to them. kids anyways shouldn't in my opinion be able to have a social media account until middle school or at least and age that they can understand what advertising companies are doing to them. Kids minds can be persuaded easily so it's important at a young age to teach your kids these things so they can spend their money wisely and not just on things that our society pushes us to buy. kids are attracted to new toys games and fun looking activities so you need to tell your kid that "just because other kids are doing it" doesn't mean they should be to.
